Shark skins have minute teeth-like scales called denticles that opposes drag to around 80 percent when they are scaling through oceans. Originally the 3d printing material from this was designed to be used for swimming paddles which had the speed increased by a whopping 7 percent!
Researchers and biologist have accumulated from the University of South Carolina and have started building designs combining the denticles to the 3d printing technology, creating advanced aerodynamic machines.
The office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation have put forward their support on the denticles on a research paper titled “Shark skin-inspired designs that improve aerodynamic performance,”
They have greatly empathized the fact of the anti dragging technology that the denticles have been providing to sharks for thousands of years. One such hypothesis is that sharks and airplanes have been designed to glide efficiently through water and space. Both of them have been shown to use the accumulated drag as less than possible, to efficiently lift themselves in air and water. As a result aerospace 3d technology aims in combining the denticles for the lesser involvement of dragging.
As many as 20 configurations of designs including various rows, sizes, positions were tested by these researchers where airfoils were kept inside a water flow tank. 3d printed designs using the denticles not only provided a decrease in drag but also increased the airfoils’ lift.
The aerodynamic design has been on a spree after the introduction of these denticles. The team of researchers is also planning to improvise the said design on land, as efficiently as on air. Thus, adding a whole new persona to the aerospace 3d printing.
Limiting weight is the main way that the aerospace industry can minimize the cost budget including the aircraft machine’s payload, fuel utilization, speed and even security. Since adding the denticles is more of including material, in contrast to evacuating material, the procedure radically decreases squander which results in industrial wastes.
